Mumbai: When Maya Khatri's father passed away leaving the family with no source of income, Maya decided to chip in quite literally.
When the chips were down, Maya Khatri decided to fight back by making new chips. When her father passed away she found a novel way of taking care of her family.
She started a potato wafer production with Rs 50 investment and five kilograms of potatoes. Seventeen years later the company has an annual turnover of more than Rs 30 lakh.
Maya says, ”Meri umar 14-15 saal thi tab is business mei aa chuki thi pehle do panch kilo aalu aata tha fir 10-15 kilo hua aaj ke position mei mai truck ke alawa maal nhi utarti akola ke alawa aaju baaju ke city mei bade jagah MP UP aur Andhra tak maal bhejti hu (When I started this business I was 15. We used to use 5 kilograms of potatoes then, now we need a truckload of them.)”
It's been a bumpy ride for Maya but eventually she succeeded in building a profitable business. She also paid for the education and weddings of her five sisters. Maya's mother takes immense pride in her daughter's accomplishments.
Maya’s mother Nirmalaben Khatri says, “Mero ko meri beti garv ke saman hai...Pure behano ki shadi kari usne...pura karobar sambhala...bhade ke ghar se khud ke ghar mei laye..itna bada makan bnaya..to mero ko beta se badhkar meri beti hai aajnam. ((I am so proud of everything my daughter has done. She means more to me than a son.)”
Maya now shares her secret to success with other women to make there journey from the frying pan to the food store a smooth one.
