Mumbai: Dev D - the contemporary take on Devdas is etching it's presence on Mumbaikars now.
But apart from the promotions, the Dev D himself (Abhay Deol) is thinking of getting a tattoo for the time being.
“We thought there can be a range of tattoos from the movie. I thought of getting a tattoo done and I searched for it a lot. I have one in mind, when I get it done you’ll know,” says actor Abhay Deol.
Though Dev D is directed by Anurag Kashyap, it's based on Abhay's brainwave to reinterpret Devdas for today's generation.
“I want to explore the drug culture of the urban centres of India and when I saw Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas - there was something written in 1917 or 15 and there was a story which provoked you. There was a character which seemed contemporary He has got a classic look, so if he can exist in 1917 he can also exist in 2008,” adds Abhay.
“For me it was something I wanted to explore. I wanted to explore the drug culture of the urban centers of India. And, when I saw Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas - here is something that was written in 1917 or something - and it was a story that was. It just provoked you and it was character that seemed contemporary.. He can exist in 1917 and he can exist in 2008 as well.
“Because we do have people like that even today in our society. SO to bridge the generation gap I wanted to pick up a sensitive subject and devdas just fit in. And everybody knew the story.. and everybody knows the story.. so I didn't have to sell the story to anyone.. How can we take something so iconic, and repackage it and make it look original. And that was the challenge.”
Abhay admits that he borrowed a lot for his portrayal of the doomed lover from his own personal experience.
“Long time ago I was obsessed with this one woman, I was a kid then,” says Abhay.
Dev D is all set to release on February 6 and Abhay has also tried his vocals at one of the popular numbers from the film.
