Bangalore: Janata Dal Secular leader and former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy has claimed that his father HD Deve Gowda was offered bribes when he was the Prime Minister. "When my father HD Deve Gowda was the Prime Minister, middlemen used to approach him and try to bribe him to procure defence deals," Kumaraswamy claimed.
Reacting to Kumaraswamy's claim, BJP leader Balbir Punj said, "It reconfirms the fact that bribes have been common in defence deals." He also quoted the example of the Bofors scam.
Punj questioned, "What did Kumaraswamy's father do about it? It's too late to scream about your honesty. Why didn't Gowda put it on record when he was offered a bribe?"
This comes amidst similar claims made by Army Chief General VK Singh of being offered bribe to clear defence deals. General Singh had claimed that he was offered bribe by Lt Gen (retd) Tejinder Singh to clear sub-standard vehicles for the Army.
