New Delhi: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has found blatant disregard of norms by several flying schools across the country.

The DGCA has warned the schools that there permits will be cancelled if they fail to comply with the guidelines.

Audits of as many as 40 flying schools were carried out by the DGCA in the wake of the fake pilot scam in which licenses of more than 20 pilots were cancelled, and all of them were found to be violating norms.

After the audit, carried out since April, the DGCA has served 30-day notice to the flying schools.

As many as 14 fake pilots have been arrested so far while three DGCA employees have also been arrested for facilitating in issuing fake licences.

Apart from these, four touts were also arrested by Delhi police.

CNN-IBN had highlighted the issue as early as December 2010. The results of an RTI query had then revealed how many flying schools were operating with phased out aircrafts, and sub standard equipment.

Even the quality of the instructors was questionable. The RTI had further revealed that in India, one to three accidents per year were caused mainly due to poor quality of training and instructors.

After a story done on the Jaipur based Rajasthan Flying School, many fake pilots including one instructor were arrested for fudging records.

The regulatory authority has now given a stern warning and a fixed time period for defaulters to fall in line. It is an essential action perhaps to make the skies a safer place.
