Chennai: The Tamil Nadu state assembly witnessed fresh bouts of verbal duels. Opposition demanded a debate of the lawyer-police clashes of Thursday. The government issued a statement saying that the violence started because lawyers resisted arrest. The arrest was to be made over the attack on Janata party president Subramanium Swamy.
The Chief Justice of the Madras High Court has called for a CBI probe into the clashes. Courts and tribunals across the state stayed shut on Friday.
"You ask me, 110 is misused so that after that there is no debate. We are not allowed to raise any issue and we are pushed out of the legislature. That is what is happening here. No freedom of speech and we cannot speak even in the assembly. Where else can we go and raise such important issues?" said Bader, a AIADMK MLA.
"There is no justice even in courts. Like Amma (AIADMK chief Jayalalitha) said article 356 must be enforced and this government must be dissolved," added Paneerselvam, another AIADMK MLA.
CNN-IBN interacted with KP Jain, the DGP of Chennai.
CNN-IBN: Do you think the police could have acted in a more restrained manner?
K P Jain: Well, I think we exercised a lot of restraint because as you know, a large number of our constables have been injured in the incident yesterday. At least three of them have received serious injuries. We did use a lot of restraint and even if you see the pictures that have appeared in the media, from them you will know that we couldn't have used more restraint. We are after all the protectors of Law.
CNN-IBN: Do you think the arrest of the laywers inside the court was necessary and that it could not have waited till they came out?
K P Jain: No, I do not think any arrest was made inside the High Court, it was made outside the High Court. Yesterday, these people came and gave a complaint against Mr Subramaniam Swamy and demanded that he should be arrested first. That was quite wrong because we had registered a case as per what we are to do when a cognizable case is reported. But whether we should make an arrest or not is upon our discretion and our judgment founded on the basis of available evidence. Not everybody against whom a complaint is given are arrested. So that is our position. But I must mention that a very small portion of lawyers are involved in this. Most of the lawyers are condemning this.
