Ranchi: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been asked by the Ranchi District Arms Magistrate to produce a character certificate for getting a license to keep a 9mm pistol.
The Magistrate recently wrote to Dhoni that he should furnish a Swachchhata Praman Patra (character certificate) if he wished to procure the weapon in view of the increasing criminal activities in Jharkhand, police said on Wednesday.
The certificate could be obtained from SP (Special Branch), SP (Vigilance) and SP (CID), said the letter, in the first official communication after the cricketer applied for the weapon in September.
Annoyed over the requirement of 'character certificate' from their hero, a group of Dhoni fans on Wednesday demonstrated at the Elbert Ekka Chowk.
Ranchi's Deputy Commissioner Rajeev Arun Ekka clarified that every individual has to procure character certificate in order to obtain Gun license he says law should be same for everyone.
“Celebrities are not above the law. Law is not individual specific. It should not be bended for anyone,” said Rajeev Arun Ekka.
However, Jharkand's Deputy Chief Minister Sudhir Mahto has all praises for Mahendra Singh Dhoni, “We have already awarded him with Jharkand Ratana. We will demand Centre to award him with more titles. Dhoni is nation's pride,” he said.
Speaking on Dhoni's Character cerificate Jharkand's Sports Minister Bandhu Tirkey says an Icon like Dhoni doesn't require a character cerificate, and he will take the matter to Chief Minister.
Dhoni enjoys 'Z' category security and has a non-prohibited gun license.
