Ranchi: Indian cricket team skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's security has been upgraded to Z category after he received an extortion threat of Rs 50 lakh and then another letter threatening to blow up his house in Ranchi.
Both the letters were sent by a man claiming to be a member of the Dawood Ibrahim gang.
Now Dhoni is being guarded by over 45 jawans round the clock.
The extortion letter was written by one Taslim, a gangster operating out of Ranchi, who now claims to be a member of Dawood's gang.
"Some local criminals seem to be behind all this. There are some other people involved. We are verifying all this," Sampat Meena, SSP, Ranchi, said.
As it concerned the most celebrated family of Jharkhand, the state government swung into action and extra security cover was thrown around Dhoni's house and family members.
"Some local people are trying to create some nuisance. Everything will be clear soon," said Sudhir Mahto, Jharkhand's Deputy Chief Minister.
Even before the police could act on the first letter, another letter from the same gang reached Dhoni's house threatening to blow up his house.
"The family has received another letter. We are investigating that too," said Meena.
Till the investigation in the case is complete, Dhoni and his family would take no chances regarding their security. Though Union Home Minister P Chidambaram was quite confident Dhoni could take care of himself.
"Nothing has been brought to my notice but I am sure if any threat comes he will simply swipe it over the boundary line," said Chidambaram.
