Chennai: World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand and his wife attended a felicitation ceremony where the Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni presented the world champion chess ace a diamond ring, worth Rs 5 lakh.
The function took place at Chennai in the presence of the entire cricket team, which is in the city to play the first Test against England.
Earlier in the day, charity for an NGO marked Viswanathan Anand's 39th birthday as the World Champion started his day with a noble cause.
Anand, who usually plays and wins games on his birthday enjoyed a well-deserved vacation at his home in Chennai after the gruelling World Championship match against Vladimir Kramnik of Russia in Bonn, Germany.
"He is associated with an NGO Vidyasagar which works for children with cerebral palsy. They had a programme to celebrate his birthday so he went to attend that in the morning," Anand's wife and manager Aruna said.
"I am preparing lunch of his choice and I have also baked a chocolate cake for him. Otherwise, we are having only a normal day," she said earlier in the day, hours before the felicitation function.
Aruna disclosed that she gifted Anand a holiday package to Bandhavgarh Tiger Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh last week -- obviously a perfect thing for someone who is interested in
wildlife.
While Anand went for a siesta to be fresh for a felicitation ceremony organised by the All India Chess Federation in the evening, a genial Aruna kept herself busy attending to telecallers.
