Mumbai: Sonata, the largest selling watch brand from the Tata group has signed Indian batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni as its brand ambassador.

The brand targets a growth of 20 to 25 per cent at 50 lakh units in 2006-07 against 40 lakh units sold in 2005-06.

"We expect a growth of 20 to 25 per cent at 50 lakh units in 2006-07 with an increase of market share in the target segment by five per cent," Sonata Business Head C Srinivasan

said on Wednesday.

Sonata currently holds a market share of 23 to 24 per cent in the under Rs 1000 segment.

As per the contract, Dhoni will endorse the Sonata range of watches for the next two years.

When asked on selection of Dhoni, Srinivasan said both Dhoni and Sonata are number one in their respective ‘segments’.

"Both epitomise reliability and are unique achievers in their category," he said.

Sonata is sold through retail network of over 10,000 dealers and primarily operates in the Rs 1000 watch market.
