Dhule: Maharashtra policemen, who were caught on camera vandalising property during the Dhule riots, are now facing strong calls of action against them. The incident raised some serious questions over the police's handling of the riot, during which six people died and over a hundred were injured.
While a high level investigation is on to nab those responsible for the vandalism, footage of policemen caught red handed has come as a major embarrassment for the force. Policemen were caught on tape smashing water drums and damaging two-wheelers parked along the street where the riot erupted on January 6.
Though over a hundred policemen were also injured during one of Maharashtra's worst riots, some affected families accuse the police of selectively targeting people. "They broke doors and walls. The policemen beat me. I have injuries on my arms," Jaibun Nisa, a local, said.
Demands are now being made for strict action against the erring officers. "Maharashtra government is sending a constitutional message that such actions will not be tolerated. It is against the law and strict criminal action should be taken against them, not merely suspension," said social activist, Teesta Setalwad.
Surfacing days after a detailed enquiry report was submitted into Dhule riots, the video clips have raised some serious questions over the police's handling of the riot. While authorities have promised action against those policemen who are found guilty, swift action is what the locals are demanding to douse the smouldering anger.
