Kasipur (Orissa): Life will never be the same for Chintamani Nayak of Naugaon village. His dream of becoming a father was shattered when his pregnant wife died of diaorrhea.

“I lost my pregnant wife because of food scarcity. Now I am helpless,” laments Chintamani.

Chintamani is one of many villagers grappling with poverty, food scarcity and forced to drink contaminated water.

The diaorrhea and gastroeneritis outbreak was simply waiting to happen, and has already claimed more than 100 lives.

Kasipur block is the worst hit with the official death toll being 49. But unofficial estimates indicate the death toll is around 80.

And it is a similar story in neighbouring villages too. About 600 people have been admitted to hospitals in a serious condition.

“People have died because of break of out diaorrhea that happened due to contaminated water and unhygienic condition of the people,” says Dr Rajendra Prasad Mandal of Tikiri PHC.

Shortage of doctors is another big problem, Kasipur is facing. Only two doctors have been sanctioned in eight health centres, which is just one-sixth of the sanctioned number of 12.

The state government however, has now rushed a medical team to the area.

”Twelve medical team are there to try and control the situation. The Health secretary is also camping on there to monitor the situation,” says Orissa Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik.

With starvation deaths already on the rise and now this epidemic, the Orissa government has its task cut out.
