New Delhi: Amidst allegations of dubious funding of his companies, BJP president Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday got an all round support, not just from the RSS, but from the BJP's top brass. It started with Nagpur, where senior RSS leader Manmohan Vaidya called the allegations against Gadkari a trial by media. Senior party leaders LK Advani, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley followed suit standing by the BJP president.

While Gadkari may now be unwilling to take tough questions anymore from the media, he managed to silence his critics within the party with the huge support he received from the RSS and the party leadership.

Taking a cue from Advani and RSS, Sushma Swaraj later tweeted in Gadkari's defence too, saying, "Shri Nitin Gadkari has categorically stated that there is no wrongdoing and has offered himself for a probe. It is unjust and unfair to accept these allegations as true without a probe. We, the members of BJP, trust our President and stand firmly behind him."

Meanwhile, the Congress has demanded a probe into the allegations. The IAC, on the other hand, maintained its stand that the Congress and the BJP were in collusion.

One reason why the RSS may be batting for Gadkari could be that many of those who benefited from Gadkari's Purti Group of companies, were allegedly RSS sympathisers or direct members. An allegation against Gadkari today could have blown up into an allegation against RSS tomorrow. But the jury is still out on the electoral impact of this support to Gadkari.
