New Delhi: It may be routine for the three Election Commissioners to come together in announcing General Elections dates but this time it was different.
After a public spat between Election Commissioner Naveen Chawla and Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami, it seems the Commission has worked out a truce.
One phase will be conducted under Gopalaswami on April 16 and the remaining four under Chawla. But the BJP, which has already promised to remove Chawla if voted to power, is expressing concerns over objectivity of the next polls.
"The Election Commission has a rich legacy. It must ensure that legacy is adhered to and elections are held free and fair,” BJP Spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
Just 24 hours back, Gopalaswami's plea that Chawla be removed for being too close to the Congress was officially rejected by the Government.
Meanwhile, the legal fraternity was split down the middle on if the CEC was right in recommending action against his colleague. Law Minister HR Bharadwaj had even warned him not to act like a political boss.
“A leader must take his friends along,” Bharadwaj said.
The manner in which the Election Commission announced the schedule for the General Elections, it clearly indicated that it has managed to hammer out a truce between the Gopalaswami and Chawla.
However, Gopalaswami still hasn’t explained what prompted him to take the hard stand against Chawla. Perhaps the last chapter of this controversy will be played out after April 20 when Gopalaswami retires.
