Mumbai: The 12th standard board exams of the Maharashtra State Board are just a few days away. However, once again, the authorities seem to have turned a blind eye to the plight of physically challenged students.
A visually challenged student, Anand Kulkarni is preparing hard ahead of his 12th standard board exams, however, revision for him is a difficult affair. Anand has to wear glasses of + 38 diopter to even see what’s written in his textbooks. He cannot write on his own and must rely on someone else to help him write his exams. Despite this Anand has managed to score 87 per cent in his pre boards. Despite facing all challenges, he still faces many problems.
“There are serious communication problems with writers. I tell him a plus b whole square and he writes a plus b square. I cannot check the question paper and eliminate,” says Anand Kulkarni.
One answer to the problem could be more time for writing the exam. His father has been fighting a battle with the state education board, over what he says are unfair rules for students who have to use writers.
“The SSC board gives just 10 minutes per hours, however, a high court order said they had to give 20 minutes for each hour. It has been two years but the SSC and the HSC have refused to implement the rule,” says Anand's Father, Dr Vijay Kulkarni.
Anand’s elder brother, Nimisha Srivastava says that when he contacted the board chairman, he refused to answer the queries.
However, it is now time for our education system to realise and tap the potential of the differently-abled.
