Diminish ties with Iran, US warns India

Washington DC: It's not just in New Delhi; the Indo-US nuclear deal seems to have run into trouble in Washington as well.

Some American lawmakers are alarmed at what they say are concessions granted by the Bush Administration to India including reprocessing rights and fuel supply guarantees.

On Capitol Hill, American lawmakers who oppose the nuclear agreement argue that when the US Congress approved the deal in 2006, it did not authorise provisions the Bush administration accepted in the 123 Agreement.

These include India's right to reprocess American nuclear fuel and uninterrupted fuel supplies without any guarantee that India will never conduct another nuclear test.

US Congress member Dan Burton says, “Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other ministers assured me that if technology was given to them for energy production it would not be used for nuclear purposes and I believe that they have signed an agreement to that effect. But Ronald Regan said trust but verify so it's important that we verify that everything they say is correct."

Another critic of the deal and former co-chair of the India caucus on Capitol Hill, Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Republican, targeted India's relations with Iran.

She argued that New Delhi should not be rewarded with the deal because it continues to expand military, political, and commercial relationship with Iran at a time when responsible nations are curtailing their dealings with Iran in light of the regime's pursuit of activities that could be used to achieve a nuclear weapons capability.

The US Congress is currently in the middle of a month-long recess and is expected to address the issue in September.

A final approval from the both the US House and the Senate is required for the deal to go through.
