Dinakaran row: Mayawati plays Dalit card

New Delhi: UP Chief Minister Mayawati has used the Dinakaran impeachment row to play her Dalit card. In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, she has demanded that Justice Dinakaran be allowed to present his case or else it will be against “principles of natural justice.”

Mayawati on Saturday sought the intervention of the Prime Minister to ensure that the Karnataka High Court Chief Justice got an opportunity to present his point of view before any action is taken against him.

Justice Dinakaran, who faces the charge of amassing disproportionate assets and grabbing land, faces an impeachment motion admitted against him in the Rajya Sabha.

In a letter, Mayawati said, “The manner in which things are moving ahead at present, without giving him any chance to explain his case, is not in keeping with the importance of the matter.”

However, Congress Spokesperson Manish Tiwari told CNN-IBN, “The entire debate is getting completely skewed. No one seems to understand the impeachment process. The person who is impeached is given the liberty to present his case in front of both the houses of Parliament. I don’t think there is a case for anyone to take a position, it’s far too premature. The inquiry committee has to come to a definitive conclusion, we can’t take a position before that.”

Seventy five Rajya Sabha MPs have signed an impeachment petition against Dinakaran on grounds of corruption.

Sources say that both the party and Government are not too keen to impeach Dinakaran. But now with Mayawati coming to Dinakaran's defence the Congress will have to take a firm stand on the issue soon.
