New Delhi: Medha Patkar has met the Social Justice Minister Meira Kumar in Delhi to discuss the raising of the height of the Sardar Sarovar dam on River Narmada.
But, its not just Narmada that's on her mind.
This Narmada Bachao Andolan queen is raising a call for unity, cutting across state boundaries and spearheading some serious issues.
"More and more land is being given away in West Bengal, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. Living communities being killed is unacceptable," said she at a gathering.
Quite clearly Medha Patkar's sense of empathy has now gone well beyond those affected by the Sardar Sarovar Dam and 2007 is a year of the new Medha Patkar, the champion of all dispaced persons in India.
"In 2007 more people should join hands. Displaced people should come together and fight," says she.
Through these protests Medha Patkar is probably trying to reinvent herself not just as a Narmada person but as one who would fight against displacement without rehabilitation across the country.
Her co-warriors and protestors agree with her decision.
Medha Patkar's own fight against the Sardar Sarovar dam has been hit by recent Supreme Court rulings allowing the Government to raise the height of the dam, but every crusader needs a cause and she is no different.
So, by carrying a flag for all displaced people of the country, she is ensuring she does not fade from public memory.
