New Delhi: Popular Disc Jockey Aqeel was detained at the Dubai airport on Tuesday evening for alleged possession of drugs.
The Dubai airport authorities reportedly found three capsules of contraband drugs with the DJ.
While the capsules have been sent for tests to find out the exact content, sources report that the capsules contained 0.4 gram of ecstasy.
A preliminary medical test conducted on DJ Aqeel for traces of drugs was reportedly negative. A urine test will be conducted on Wednesday.
Speaking to CNN-IBN, the DJ’s wife Farah Khan Ali insisted that he never did drugs. “Aqeel doesn't do drugs. The case on him is over possession of drugs and not consumption. Somebody planted the drugs on him. We request the media not to sensationalise the issue.”
DJ Aqeel has hired a lawyer and is to appear in court on Wednesday. His mother-in-law, Zareen Khan, also alleged that he was framed.
“It is shocking but it is clear that somebody is trying to frame him. Aqeel is a very happy-go-lucky and clean man,” she told CNN-IBN.
The incident is just another instance of celebrities being caught for abusing or dealing in drugs.
Most recently, last month, former cricketer Maninder Singh was held with 1.5 grams of cocaine. He was later released on bail on surety of Rs 50,000 after he was booked for possession, sale, consumption and purchase of drugs.
Much in the limelight last year for abusing and possessing drugs was also late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan’s son Rahul Mahajan who was hospitalized after consuming drugs. AIIMS doctors confirmed that Pramod Mahajan's secretary, Bibek Maitra, who was with Rahul that night, died due to an overdose of drugs.
The list of high-profile drug abusers, however, doesn't end there.
In August 2005, Salil Chaturvedi, owner of the multi-crore apparel brand Provogue was arrested for possession of cocaine.
Actors Fardeen Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Hollywood star Kate Moss are some of the famous personalities who have confessed to using cocaine.
