Chennai: After over six months in Tihar Jail, DMK MP Kanimozhi finally arrived in Chennai to a rousing welcome by her party cadres on Saturday. It was an emotional homecoming. There were drum beats, banners and celebrations all the way from airport to her CIT colony residence.

Kanimozhi came back to a big welcome organised by her party. Her father and DMK chief Karunanidhi, her step brother Stalin, her mother Rajathi Ammal and a posse of ministers and party cadres gathered at the Chennai airport to greet and welcome her home. In the midst of all the drama, her smile was hard to miss.

"I am very happy to have come home after a long time and was happy to see the support of my party workers," Kanimozhi said.

For a party that has been facing the wrath of the present government and battling out accusations of land grabbing and disproportionate assets against its leaders, including Stalin, Kanimozhi's homecoming might come as a huge relief. But it's clear that after all the struggle for the bail, the real challenge is the trial itself.

Kanimozhi, however, said that she will prove her innocence.

In the midst of all the ostensible show of support for Kanimozhi on ground, the DMks' first family still remains divided. As for Kanimozhi, much depends on how she plays her political cards and reiterates herself in the party in an organisational role that would give her some control over her cadres.

For now, Kanimozhi is a happy woman, but the continuing trial and its outcome will decide her political future.
