New Delhi: A 28-year-old man was gored to death and over 100 people injured during a Jallikattu, organised by the ruling DMK in Tiruchi on Sunday.

The party had organised the traditional bull-baiting sport in Tamil Nadu, as part of the month-long celebrations of DMK President M Karunanidhi's birthday that fell on June 3.

The 28-year-old man died after being gored by a bull at Tiruchi’s Anna Stadium. Reports suggest that the Supreme Court's directives on the sport were flouted at the arena.

According to the organisers, over 500 ferocious bulls with sharpened horns and as many contestants, mostly youth in their 20s, participated in the game.

Last January, the apex court had laid down strict regulations to ensure that animals as well as spectators are not mistreated in the sport.

The Supreme Court had required bulls to be medically examined before the event to ensure that they were not intoxicated, given steroids or made more aggressive in any other way.

Jallikattu has become a controversial issue since 2007, when animal welfare activists took the matter to court on the ground that the bull-taming or bull-baiting event amounted to cruelty to animals.

The Supreme Court had banned the event slated for the day after Pongal, but reversed its decision in a couple of days after the DMK regime feared unrest across the state if the popular sport was banned during festival time.

Earlier this year, close to 300 people had gone on a daylong fast in Aranganallur, the village that's home to the famous sport, after SC refused to revoke the ban.

However, the state government filed a review petition in the Supreme Court to reconsider the ban and the apex court finally gave in but with a few riders.
