CHENNAI : The State government on Monday signed a Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with five auto majors to bring in new investments to the tune of Rs 5,700 crore.
Ashok Leyland signed an MoU on September 8, 2008, to set up a light vehicle manufacturing unit. But the previous DMK regime sanctioned the land required by the company only on February 21, 2011, and had also failed to make decisions on certain requirements of the company. As such, the unit was yet to take off.
After the present AIADMK government assumed office, the MoU was revived on Monday. The company’s units will be established at Hosur, Pillaipakkam, Ennore, Vellivayalsavadi and Oragadam will provide employment to 3,000 people.
Eicher Motors Limited, which manufactures Royal Enfield motorcycles, will set up its unit in an area of 50 acres at the SIPCOT park at Oragadam, which will provide job opportunities for 300 people.
Philips Carbon Black Limited will start its unit for producing carbon black, requ-ired for making tyres, at the SIPCOT Park at Thervoykandigai in Thiruvallur district. The unit will provide employment opportunities to 230 people, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa announced.
