TIRUCHY: Comparing the welfare schemes of the AIADMK government with those of the previous DMK government, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said the previous government’s schemes were aimed at benefiting DMK leader M Karunanidhi’s family, while the AIADMK government’s schemes were intended for people’s benefit.
Citing an example, Jayalalithaa said the DMK’s free colour TV scheme was aimed at benefiting Karunanidhi’s family, which owned a cable TV network.
Jayalalithaa said Rs 1,000 crore was given for building one lakh houses for those who lost their dwelling places in the aftermath of cyclone Thane. A rehabilitation plan at a cost of Rs 790 crore over five years for farmers was announced in the floor of the House, she pointed out.
Free milch cows and goats being given to the people would help villagers generate income and become self-reliant. She narrated a story to drive home how selfish persons (like Karunanidhi) exploit those who trust them. Inaugurating the finished projects and laying foundation stones for various development schemes worth Rs 240 crore, she said she had been fulfilling her poll promises.
She recalled that she had laid foundation stones for schemes worth Rs 190 crore in June 2011 immediately after assuming power.
Later, she distributed welfare assistance under the Social Welfare Department, TN Sports Authority and Revenue Department.
Jayalalithaa also handed over keys to beneficiaries of green house projects, besides laptops and free cows, and handed over keys of battery-operated vehicles to the Sri Jambukeshwarar temple at Tirvanaikoil.
