New Delhi: The Delhi Metro mishaps have put the spotlight on Metro constructions across the cities.
The crash on Sunday in south Delhi and then on Monday at the same spot during the relief work has put the spotlight on the contractor, Gammon India. Gammon was the contactor when a section the Panjaguta Flyover in Hyderabad caved in, in 2007, killing two people.
Hyderabad is still looking for a contractor to get its Rs 12,000-crore Metro project on track.
Other cities have also gone the Metro way. The 45-km stretch of Phase I of the Chennai Metro Rail Project which began in June this year is slated to be completed by 2015.
After several delays, Mumbai's Metro One rail project started last year with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation MRC and E Sreedharan as the planning and execution advisor of the project.
An accident at the Andheri West site in May 2008 that killed one person, wasn't a good start but work at the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar line is in progress.
Bangalore, too, has had three deaths at Metro construction sites in 2008 alone.
Officials admit the Delhi mishaps are a forewarning for Namma Metro. A thorough check is expected to pre-empt any structural or design flaws.
With Hyderabad and Kochi yet to start their dream run with the Metro, the lessons learnt from other cities need to be implemented before the commuters' faith comes crashing down.
