Do our MPs care about real issues?

New Delhi: If you thought Parliamentarians were really concerned about serious legislative business, think again!

While the Winter Session of Parliament came to its end on Tuesday, the House did manage to hold a threadbare discussion on the Indo-US nuclear Bill, but very few contentious bills made it through during this session.

The OBC Bill and the Tribal bill were notable exceptions. But the Sachar Committee report went undiscussed and so did the Women's Reservations Bill. The controversial Bill was once again pushed under the rug in spite of repeated assurances from the Prime Minister and the Lok Sabha Speaker to have the Bill passed during this session.

"Dhiraj toot raha hai, (We are losing patience)," BJP MP Maya Singh said in frustration. Congress MP Pratibha Singh spoke in the same tone when she said: "We need help from the male members."

BJP MP Sumitra Mahajan called it 'a teaser'. "It's painful," she said.

It's not just the Women's Reservation Bill, but several other more contentious and contemporary issues like the fallout of the Sachar Report and the controversy over the SEZs were not debated during the Winter Session of Parliament. It's a sign perhaps that Parliament has ceased to grapple with issues of public importance.

"On Sachar Panel report, we are disappointed. It wasn't taken up for discussion in Parliament," BJP MP Sushma Swaraj says.

The Left, obviously, were disappointed over the SEZ issue. "We are disappointed that the SEZ issue was not taken up," Sitaram Yechury of CPM said.

But at the end of the day, it seems no one is really concerned over the wastage of Parliament's time. "Over 24 per cent time in Lok Sabha and 29 hours in Rajya Sabha was wasted due to pandemonium over various issues," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi points out.
