Noida (Uttar Pradesh): The controversial Noida double murder case probe ended in a sensational revelation on Friday when police arrested Dr Rajesh Talwar for the murder of his 14-year-old daughter Arushi Talwar and manservant Hemraj.
Police said the father was having an extra-marital affair with Dr Anita Durrani, also dentist who he used to work with in their private clinic. Arushi apparently did not approve of the illicit affair.
Dr Anita Durrani has also been detained. She has been named as an accomplice. Arushi's mother, Dr Nupur, is also being questioned.
At a press conference held in Noida on Friday evening, Inspector General of Police Meerut Range Gurdarshan Singh revealed the sordid details of the crime.
"Talwar was having an extra marital affair. Arushi knew about it. Hemraj also knew about it and had told his his friends," Singh said.
Singh revealed Arushi and Hemraj were murdered on May 16, around 0100 hrs (IST).
Under fire from the media for initial bungling in the investigation, Singh sought to explain how the police overlooked Hemraj's dead body on the first day. He explained Dr Rajesh Talwar made a "sentimental attack" on the investigating officers. He said, Dr Rajesh Talwar told the police who had arrived at his house that his manservant, Hemraj, was responsible for the murder and sent them away on a wild goose chase.
Hemraj's dead body was found a day later on the Talwars' terrace.
Murder Most Foul
Singh said Dr Rajesh Talwar was having an extra-marital affair, which Arushi objected to. She discussed the issue with Hemraj and the two had come to share a close relationship.
On the night of the murder, Singh said, Dr Rajesh Talwar had returned from his clinic and had found the two in an "objectionable" position, but not in a compromising position, he clarified.
Singh said, Hemraj had told with his friends about the affair, which the doctor did not like. "Hemraj also told his friends of a threat to his life."
He added, that on the pretext of talking to Hemraj, the doctor took him to the terrace and hit him on his head with a heavy weapon and used a sharp-edged weapon to slit his throat. Then he came downstairs, had whisky and around 0100 hrs (IST) killed Arushi in a similar manner.
After killing Hemraj, the police official said the doctor took elaborate measures to hide the dead body and ensure that it was not discovered by his other servants and the neighbours.
Piecing the Puzzle Together
"We have sufficient evidence to prove that Talwar committed both the murders. We have detained Nupur Talwar and are interrogating her as well," said Singh.
Singh said that Arushi's room is just four-to-five feet away from her parents’ room and so it was unlikely that the parents did not hear her being murdered.
At 0600 hrs (IST) the next day, on discovering the dead body the doctor first called his neighbours. He did not call the police immediately.
When police first spoke to the doctor, he named his domestic help, Hemraj, as the suspect and used "sentimental attack", to persuade the police to leave his house and go looking for Hemraj, who was already lying dead on the terrace.
"Rajesh Talwar and his associates placed the mattress on to the terrace after the body was sent for postmortem. The mattress was placed using the neighbours terrace door so that Hemraj's body would not be discovered," Singh stated.
Singh said, the doctor took pains to hide the dead body on the terrace. "The cooler's cover was removed and kept on Hemraj's dead body so that nobody could see it."
Singh also said that Dr Rajesh Talwar had made calls from his phone around the same time Arushi is beileved to have been killed.
Singh said that the next step would be to secure remand for Dr Rajesh Talwar so they could question him further and recover the weapons - possibly a hammer-like object and a sharp instrument - used in the killing.
Dr Talwar has been produced in court. He is being taken to Dasna Jail beyond Greater Noida and will remain in police custody for 14 days.
Horror Rewind
Arushi, a class IX student of a school in Noida, was found with her throat slit last Friday. A day later, Hemraj, the Nepali servant of the Talwar household who was initially named as prime suspect by the Noida Police, was found dead on the terrace. His throat had been slit ina similar manner.
After a series of bungling and wild goose chase, the police finally zeroed in on Arushi's parents, Dr Nupur and Dr Rajesh Talwar. They were subjected to intensive questioning on Thursday night for five hours.
On Friday, they were taken to an undisclosed location where they were questioned again, during which Rajesh is said to have made contradictory statements.
Both husband and wife worked as dentists at the renowned city hospital Fortis. They also had a private clinic at their residence, where another dental surgeon couple - Dr Anita and Dr Praful Durrani - used to work.
Police on Friday confirmed that both murders were commited by Dr Talwar. Dr Anita Durrani has also been detained. She has been named as an accomplice. Arushi's mother is being questioned.
The arrests come a day after Ganesh had said there was a strong possibility of "honour killing" or "an extreme crime of passion", a covert hint that the killing could have been by the girl's relatives.
Arushi was found murdered in her bedroom at her L-32 Jalvayu Vihar home in Sector 25, Noida, last Friday. She had wounds on her forehead, shoulder and chest as well.
The police immediately declared Hemraj as their suspect but were red-faced when he was found murdered on the terrace of the Talwars' home, a day later.
The fact that the killer’s entry to the household was friendly and that Arushi's parents "slept" through two brutal killings in the next room had greatly baffled the police.
Her parents were interrogated almost everyday for a few hours at undisclosed locations since last Wednesday. On Thursday they were questioned for five hours and on Friday were taken to an undisclosed location. On Friday afternoon, police held a press conference to reveal the sordid details of the murder that has shocked not just the National Capital Region but the whole nation.
