Kolkata: Dr Pradyot Kumar is one doctor who has taken his Hippocratic oath very seriously. So much so, that when his patient died, he went and lodged a police complaint against himself, saying his negligence cost a life.
"According to my conscience, whatever I felt I should do at that time, I've done," is all he has to say.
Dr Kumar's patient was a 32-year-old woman Prabhati Patra who had come to him for an abortion. After her surgery, Prabhati died due to post-operative complications.
The doctor has told the police that it's all his fault because he had, by accident, caused a cut in the patient's uterus. However, Prabhati's own family says they will not be filing a complaint.
"We are not going to complain to the police. We are just sad that we have lost a loved one. But if the doctor is really guilty, we just hope this will never happen to anybody else," said a relative of the patient.
The police have now asked the Medical Board of West Bengal to conduct a probe, and see if this is indeed medical negligence.
Dr Pradyot Kumar's name will remain in the history of all doctors. He is the epitome of hope to all his patients. A hero to local eyes, to himself he's just a villain.
