In Doc Talk this week, transplant surgeon Dr A.S. Soin tells you how to avoid falling prey to Alcoholic Liver disease.
A 2007 survey revealed that 4 per cent people in the world die due to excessive alcohol intake. If you habitually drink more than 2-3 pegs a day, its time you got worried because that much is enough to cause fatty liver in a month, alcoholic hepatitis in a year and cirrhosis in 10 years which may ultimately prove fatal. You must meet a liver specialist if you have symptoms like:
- Abdominal pain on the right side
The most important treatment is to stop consuming alcohol. Vitamins like B-complex and folic acid, also help the liver to heal. In case cirrhosis has developed, lifestyle management which becomes the key. In case of complications you may also need a liver transplant.
Amount of alcohol that can cause liver damage varies from person to person. Males drinking more than 5 units and females more than 3 units per day for over 10 years are at high risk. Women are more at risk genetically. And binge drinking is less injurious than daily drinking. The other reasons why the same amount of alcohol induces more damage in some people than others are:
- Genetic factors
It is best to discuss your alcohol intake with your doctor to know how much is safe for you. A good diet and avoiding obesity will also help in improving this condition. For more information you can log on to health@ibnlive.com
