Madurai: A doctor has been arrested for allegedly raping a 16-year old girl who had come for treatment at a private hospital in Madurai, police said on Tuesday.
The doctor, Sankaranayaranan, had allegedly given her some drug when she visited the hospital on Monday and had raped her when she was semi-conscious, police said.
When the girl told her relatives that she had been raped, locals surrounded the hospital.
The doctor locked himself inside his room and refused to come out, fearing that he would be assaulted, police said, adding, they had to break open the door and arrest him.
Cases under various IPC sections including 376 (rape), have been registered, police said, adding, he was remanded to judicial custody for 15 days by a Judicial Magistrate court on Tuesday.
The girl has been sent for medical examination.
