Doctors blame delay in Delhi's 2 H1N1 deaths

New Delhi: The national capital on early Thursday registered the first reported death due to H1N1 Influenza A virus (swine flu).

Renu Gupta, a 38-year-old woman and Samrat Pandya, a 31-year-old man died at the city's Ram Manohar Lohia hospital (RML). Doctors at the hospital said the woman ignored the symptoms for far too long, making it difficult for the medical team to save her.i`

Samrat Pandya and Renu Gupta had been individually admitted to the hospital in a critical condition and had been immediately put on ventilator support.

Gupta had been complaining of flu-like symptoms since mid August but was only admitted on August 19.

She had in fact returned from Singapore on August 16.

Pandya had checked with a private hospital before being brought to RML on August 15. His distraught father blames the hospital for his death.

He alleges that when the situation turned critical, the apparatus at the hospital failed. He alleges that the faulty instruments caused delay and the resultant death.

Doctors say delayed treatment may have cost both Renu Gupta and Samrat Pandya their lives as both had underlying respiratory conditions.

Medical Superintendent of RML hospital Dr N K Chaturvedi said, "One thing we should learn from all this is that any patient who is showing symptoms should consult the doctor and monitor their situation."

The capital has recorded more than 300 cases of the H1N1 flu so far. While many of the patients have recovered with treatment, many are now in home quarantine.

Those admitted at hospitals across the city are all said to be in stable condition.

Screening centres at government hospitals remain open round the clock, for preliminary checkups as well as to take samples of suspected cases for testing.

While the rush has reduced over the last couple of days with noticeable reduction in the panic factor, it is advisable to get suspected cases checked. especially in those cases where an existing respiratory condition or heart ailment is involved.
