The big Indian hope of indian hockey, Baljit underwent eye surgery at New Delhi's AIIMS hospital on Saturday but doctors have not promised too much in terms of saving the eye.
It was a shot that changed the entire game for Baljit Singh. His right eye was severely injured when he was hit by a golf ball during a practice session in Pune.
Not wearing the regulation safety helmet proved costly for Baljit. His cornea, lens and retina were badly damaged. He also suffered several bone fractures. Despite an emergency surgery at AIIMS, doctors fear he could lose his vision completely.
Admitting that the day he had arrived at AIIMS, his eye condition was much worse, the doctors still mention that they have seen other such cases in the past have not done well.
Although it's only his right eye that is damaged as of now, doctors fear it could lead to several complications in the future owing to the massive strain on hs left eye.
The Indian hockey team is shaken by the news. The team's coach said that Baljit has been the number one goalkeeper for India for the past two years. He had helped win matches single-handedly at East Germany and other events.
Teammate Tushar said, "Baljeet is our very aggressive and very talented goalkeeper. With him not there, we'll be under pressure."
Even as doctors at AIIMS are doing their best to restore Baljit's vision, the entire nation is praying for his recovery and hoping to see him back on the field again.
