New Delhi: Kiran Bedi, the tough ex-cop, is in news again. This time, it is a documentary film made on her career and personality. The film showcased at the Toronto film festival received a standing ovation.
The film titled Yes Madam, Sir shows how Kiran Bedi did exceedingly well in a male-dominated field of Indian Police Services. That is how the title too portrays the guts and glory of being India’s first woman police officer.
And Bedi who witnessed the standing ovation at the Toronto film festival agrees that film maker Megan Doneman has done justice to her fight so far.
“Oh, she has covered everything. She researched it well and reached Amritsar. She reached out to my husband, my daughter, my father and my friends. I think she has reached out to everybody,” said Bedi.
The film had to be re-screened for the Indian community on popular demand.
“It is exceedingly well researched and absolutely to the ground. She followed me for the last two years of my postings and then she went back. Then she accessed archival footage from television archives across the world. I think she has done a great job,” said Bedi.
Actually, 'Yes Madam, Sir' could easily be renamed- 'Don’t stop, go on' because that is the motto of the strong woman’s life marked with struggles at various levels while carrying out her duties.
And if this documentary was to be made into a celluloid biopic, who would be the preferred maker, we wonder. “Shyam Benegal!” pat comes the answer.
