Low voter turnout in South Mumbai

Mumbai: After the horror of 26/11, Mumbai saw thousands of citizens out on road. The angry public targeted the system, politics and demanded change.

But just five months later, it seems South Mumbai has completely forgotten it. In this constituency where 26/11 took place, only 43.3 per cent of eligible voters turned up to cast their votes. The turnout is 1 per cent less than 2004.

Most of the South Mumbaikars say they didn’t vote because they were frustrated by the administration at the polling booths.

“They told us to go and come back after two hours. This is ridiculous. We waited for half an hour and then they want us to go and come back after two hours,” says one of the voters.

Though some would not have cared to caste their vote, there are some who think it is necessary and should be done.

“If after all the awareness campaigns, after 26/11 people still don’t come out to vote, it is a matter of shame. We don’t deserve a good government then,” says columnist Anil Dharker.
