Bangalore: Animal lovers in Bangalore were up in arms after they read an invitation to a religious function at the Shaneshwara temple, which said 25 dogs would be sacrificed during the function on Friday.
“We came across a pamphlet which said they are going to burn 25 dogs alive so that's why we went and alerted the police and lodged a complaint,” said an animal lover Srinivasan.
But when CNN-IBN went to investigate, the temple's head priest claimed it was all a big mistake. He said it is a printing error, and that the dogs are to be fed and not immolated. The temple has even put up fresh pamphlets with the mistake rectified.
From 8 in the morning, the homa starts and before that 25 dogs will be fed MTR food. The other pamphlet has been mis-printed,” said the head priest at Shaneshwara Temple, Subramanya Dikshit.
Despite the public outcry, the local police too feel its much ado about nothing.
“On the very face of it, it appears to be a very silly proposition but somebody did come to the police station on Wednesday with a petition that such a thing will happen,” said DCP (South East), Bangalore, Soumendu Mukherjee.
Was it a misprint or were 25 dogs actually going to be sacrificed? That still remains a mystery but for the moment those dogs are safe. As someone said, to err is human, to forgive canine.
