There's always something new for canine friends, whether it's a dog psychiatrists or dog hotels, diamond-studded collars and leashes, dog jewellery, canine beauty saloons or dog spas. This time, it's bottled water.
Avery Beverages have a wide range of flavours, including some unpalatable-sounding ones such as 'Toxic Slime', 'Dog Drool', 'Swamp Juice' and 'Bug Barg'. The popularity of the gross-sounding flavours gave the owners a brain-wave and so came Woof Water.
"It was inspired by Dog Drool, from our gross soda line," says Avery's general manager, Rob Metz.
He adds that a lot of customers buy bottled water, particularly in towns that have heavily chlorinated water, which the dogs do not drink. Dogs are given spring water, in these situations. That is what led to the genesis of Woof Water.
"Woof Water is requested by name by more dogs than any other bottled water. 'Woof? Woof?' quips Metz.
Nothing is added to Woof Water, nor is anything taken out, the owner maintains. It's just regular spring water.
When asked if any testing had been done on this product, Metz said, "We did some market research and found that 9 out of 10 dogs prefer Woof Water over toilet bowl water. Well, dogs are very discerning as we know. And, yes and we're working on that 10th dog. We think we can turn him around," he said, keeping a straight face.
One pooch, Toby, took a sip and barked. "Toby's saying 'Woof! Woof!'. Woof Water!" says Metz.
And Bella, a mini golden diddle took a few sips.
"She said it had hints of currant with oakey overtones, and a smooth dry finish," Metz deadpanned.
A customer feels it's ridiculous.
"He (her dog) can drink water in a puddle, I mean," she said, but agreed that when it's a special dog or a special occasion, then it's Woof Water, for sure.
"It's a fun thing," says Metz, simply, "and that's what we're all about here - just doing fun stuff."
