Don redone for looks that kill

Mumbai: It’s the year 2006 and it's a new Don. As Shah Rukh Khan takes on Amitabh Bachchan’s immortal role in Farhan Aktar's remake of the 70's classic, the look is decidedly different.

The clothes, hair and make up were consciously designed to project a contemporary 2006 look.

Old wine in a new bottle, would you say? Not quite, even if you sneak in a sartorial tribute or two. So film buff and designer Aki Narula decided to do it his way.

"In the Khaike paan banaraswala song, Mr Bachchan wore a clove motiff on his waist coat. So I used the same print and put it on a shirt for Shah Rukh. Other than that, we have a leather jacket for Shah Rukh, that's a cross between a bomber jacket and a trench coat. So the look, the colours and styling is very 2006," he explains.

Make up artiste Mickey Contractor put his brushes to work, creating a new face for a familiar role.

"It's dark eyes and we've given Priyanka a mid-tone mouth. We made sure she didn't look anything like Zeenat Aman in Don," he says.

So the new Don's spiffy enough but will it be all smoke and no fire at the box office? For that, we'll have to wait and watch.
