Don under threat? Govt says yes, Salem says no
New Delhi: According to a notification issued by Maharashtra government, underworld don Abu Salem's life is under threat. So much so that the state government says he cannot be produced in any court of the land.
In fact, the Mumbai Police have instructions from the Home Ministry not to let Salem out of the Arthur Road jail where he is lodged because they claim he can be attacked by members of global terrorist groups.
However, Salem himself says there is no threat and the government is repeating the names of terror suspects - that came up during his narco analysis - as an excuse to keep him in jail without trial.
His lawyer, Arvind Shukla says, "The prosecution has no evidence to start a trial and so are using such tactics to keep him behind bars.”
Salem, one of the main accused in the 1993 Bombay blasts case, was extradited from Portugal in 2005 and is facing multiple charges in various courts including the Patiala House court in Delhi .
The court repeatedly sent summons to Salem but he has not been produced so far.
Ironically, Salem went all out to prevent his extradition from Portugal alleging injustice and unfair trial but is now saying he has faith in the judiciary and that the government is conspiring to deny him the right to fair trial.
The case comes up for hearing May 29 and that’s when the picture will become clearer.
