Donate blood at Mumbai railway station

Mumbai: A unique blood donation drive has been started in Mumbai to help the children suffering from Thalassaemia. A makeshift blood donation facility is organised at Mumbai's busy Dadar Railway station to catch the attention of blood donors while they are on their way to work.

"It hardly took me ten to 15 minutes to donate blood. I could not have taken out time to go for a blood donation camp. But since it’s located at the railway station I can spare this much time to help someone in need,” said 29 year old lawyer Ismael who took out time to donate blood in between shifting trains at the station.

While the initiative has made the blood donation process a lot more convenient, it's proven a boon for people suffering from Thalassaemia who require blood transfusions every 15 days throughout their lives.

According to the State Blood Transfusion Council, the demand for blood for this purpose in Mumbai stands at around 3000 units per month. The camp has a healthy collection of 80 units a day, which is contributing nearly 12 per cent of the city's daily requirement.

“The months of April, May and June very difficult as far as blood transfusion is concerned. Colleges are closed, and most people are on vacation which is why we decided to set this up on a station where there is mass movement of people not just from Mumbai but also from outside,” said Vinay Shetty, Member, State Blood Transfusion Council Committee.

"I donated blood and I feel that I have done something for the Thalassaemic children,” said Mohammed, a garments merchant from Delhi who was struck by the sheer simplicity of the project. So now you too can make your contribution while in transit so being busy or traveling is no longer a good excuse.
