Mumbai: Many people driving on the roads of Mumbai have been caught for drunken driving in the past. They may have forgotten and moved on but the Mumbai police will not only remember but remind them as well.

They have now acquired technology that enables them to find out if the drunken driver at hand is a repeat offender. And all it requires is a mobile phone and a database that stores the history of all previous violations.

“Earlier we had to manually check records to see if person is habitual offender, now we can do it at the click of a button,” says DCP Traffic, Harish Baijal.

When a drunken driver is caught, the policeman keys in the license number into a specially enabled mobile phone that sends it to a short code number. The number is transmitted to a server that matches it with its database of previous violations. In five seconds the server sends back the number of previous offences. In the meantime, it also records the current offence.

The police can now practically implement stricter penalty for repeat offenders. While a first time offender can be fined rs 2000, sent to jail for 6 months and have his license cancelled or suspended for the same period. A repeat offender could be fined rs 3000, sent to jail for 2 years and have his license cancelled permanently.

This also helps police to keep track of people using illegal duplicate licenses.
