Don't expect much at Azlan Shah: Gill

New Delhi: Amid a severe crisis dogging Indian hockey, the game's governing body Chief KPS Gill has told fans not to expect the team to work wonders in their next outing at the Azlan Shah hockey tournament in Malaysia, starting on Saturday.

"The team finished third last year. However, we may not finish that high this time around," Gill told PTI.

After hitting record lows last year with early exits from the World Cup and the Asian Games in Doha, the Indian team is going to Malaysia with new coach Joachim Carvalho and Prabodh Tirkey.

India open their challenge against a tough opposition in Australia at Ipoh.

Gill reiterated that the IHF wanted to have a look at the future of Indian hockey at the tournament.

"We have a young team there. Let's see how things go," Gill said.

Stalwarts like former captain Dilip Tirkey, Gagan Ajit Singh and Viren Rasquinha were left out of the Malaysia-bound squad, but Gill assured the trip will be back.

"They will be included in the next preparatory camp" to be held after the

tournament for the Champions Challenge tournament in Belgium.
