Islamabad: Embroiled in a major crisis over the suspension of Supreme Court Chief Justice, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Friday appealed to agitating lawyers not to make it a political issue and allow the matter to be resolved according to constitutional norms.

Addressing a high-profile military day parade to mark Pakistan Day in Islamabad, Musharraf without directly referring to Iftikar Muhammed Chaudhry's suspension said, "The legal and constitutional issue before us these days will be resolved according to the legal and constitutional procedures.”

"I appeal to the lawyers to allow the government to fulfill legal and constitutional requirements. They should not make it an issue of law and order or politicise it," he said.

Lawyers across the country have struck work ever since Chaudhry was suspended on March 9 and the crisis intensified after the judge and his wife were manhandled by police while being taken towards the Supreme Court later.

Musharraf also appealed to the people of the country to join him to strengthen the fight against terrorism and extremism, which he said had spread fast in the country and emerged as a major internal threat.

"The spread of extremism and terrorism in our society has emerged as a major internal threat. An individual or a force cannot counter it. So I appeal to the nation that each and every individual should come forward and save the nation from this danger of extremism and terrorism," he said.
