Bangalore: One drive to the new international airport coming up at Devanahalli and advocate G R Mohan decided to file a PIL against the closure of Bangalore's current airport at HAL.
But it's not just about the tiresome 40-km drive from the city. He says additional usage charges for flights operating out of Bengaluru International Airport also will burn deep holes in the commuters' pockets.
"I want the airport to HAL airport to remain open. It is useful for domestic flights traveling to short distances. Let international flights be handled by BIAL. Also, the usage charges being levied are too high .It is unconstitutional and burden on passengers," he says.
Cargo operators too are lobbying for operations to continue from HAL. They say they have not been informed about operation costs and claim that the necessary infrastructure is not yet ready at Devanahalli.
Says President of Bangalore Air Cargo Club, Nirmal S Sandhu, "As of now we are not sure what the charges will be. It becomes difficult to inform out customers. It will delay payments. We are unable to plan our budget and if things don't work out, major players are considering shifting operations to Chennai, Hyderabad."
Officials at the Bengaluru International Airport are unavailable for comments. But they have been maintaining that cargo operators can move to the new facility by the 20th of this month.
With hardly one-and-a-half months left for operations to commence at the new international airport, BIAL authorities are yet to have a concrete relocation plan in place.
Anxieties and apprehension only seem to be surmounting from all quarters.
