Don't shut old airports for new: Govt

New Delhi: The standing committee on transport on Tuesday unanimously recommended to the government that existing airports in Bangalore and Hyderabad should not be shut down to give way to new ones.

The recommendations is a shot in the arm for employees of the Airports Authority of India who have been threatening to go on a strike opposing the closure of present airports.

The report says the government should renegotiate with private players to scrap or modify the clause that facilitates shutting down of present airports.

This comes just weeks before the new airport in Bangalore will be thrown open to public.

With all but the Delhi and Mumbai airports being controlled by the AAI, airport functioning across the country could be affected if the government does not renegotiate with the private players.
