Jaunpur: The Doon Express on Thursday got derailed near Mahrawa station in Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, killing at least three people died and injuring 15 other. Union Railways Minister Mukul Roy ordered an enquiry into the accident, saying sabotage cannot be ruled out.
The Railway Minister, who is mostly absent from New Delhi, ordered the routine enquiry in Kolkata.
A crowded Doon Express was en-route to Dehradun from Howrah when 11 bogies of the train went off track at around 1.13 pm. The rescue operation took place on a war footing.
Railways issued a statement saying that sleeper coaches S6, S7, S8 and SE jumped the track and tilted while S9 and two second-class bogies got derailed.
A medical team from Lucknow and a rescue team from Jaunpur were also rushed to the site of the accident.
"The locomotive pilot saw some obstruction...there were protests happening because of Bharat Bandh," said A P Mishra, member, Engineering, Indian Railways.
The theory was backed also by former Railways minister and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
"Since the accident has taken place during a countrywide bandh, we want this to be probed. Who has caused this mishap? It has to be seen whether this is truly an accident or an incident," said the Trinamool Congress chief.
It was yet another train accident, prompting questions that have never been answered satisfactorily. When will the railways ensure a safe journey for the 23 million passengers who use it everyday?
