Dope tests in play for Champs Trophy

Mumbai: This will be a first for Indian cricketers, dope tests.

The decision was recently taken by the ICC and would come into effect from the Champions Trophy and they have appointed the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to conduct the tests for the tournament that begins on October 5.

Ratnakar Shetty, Chairman of the Champions Trophy Organising Committee, says: "It’s a new thing for the cricketing fraternity. WADA is the agency which is going to do the dope tests. There are no laboratories in India. Therefore they are only going to collect the random urine samples of the players and will send it to analysts in Kuala Lumpur."

According to ICC guidelines two players will be randomly selected to undergo a dope test. And they have been informed of the WADA guidelines that they will have to comply with.

Shetty adds, "The BCCI has taken all the precautionary measures, the booklet containing the information on dope tests has been provided to all the players. John Gloster has been asked to talk to the players. And they have also sent a form to be filled by the players, for those who are taking any treatment."

With plenty of time for the players and teams to comply with the guidelines, lets hope that this time around there won’t be a repeat of the Shane Warne incident, simply because his mother gave him the wrong medicine.
