New Delhi: With the festival of lights around the corner, here's a look at the simple list of dos and don'ts to ensure that you have a safe Diwali.
Avoid loose and synthetic clothing while handling fire or fireworks and wear thick cotton clothing for safety. It always helps to think ahead and be prepared, so have a bucket of water and blanket handy for any emergency.
In case of burns, take the following steps -
1) In case of burns, wash the burnt area with normal water, remove all smoldering clothes and wrap the victim in a clean bedsheet.
2) Do not apply any cream or ointment immediately on burnt area.
3) Elevate the burned area and protect it from pressure and friction.
3) Consult a medical practitioner immediately.
In case of eye burns, wash the eye with tap water for 10 minutes and take the victim to a hospital immediately.
During Diwali, pollution levels are known to rise by about 6 to 10 per cent due to the smoke from fire crackers. Harmful chemicals emitted from the smoke can cause or aggravate asthma, allergic rhinitis, bronchitis and other respiratory problems.
Cover your mouth with muslin cloth, keep your inhalers with you, stay indoors as much as you can.
The noise levels are also quite deafening. According to the central pollution control board, 95 per cent of crackers violate noise and pollution norms. So, you have no other option but to use cotton in your ears and have a happy and safe Diwali.
