Mumbai: Pradeep Kumar can roll a dosa as expertly as any other dosawallah — something he has been doing for four long years in Mumbai.
However, he went in for an abrupt career change, and now wields a brush instead of a ladel, and successfully at that.
His paintings are now selling for anything between Rs 500 to Rs 10,000. He subsequently closed his dosa shop about six months ago and now paints full time.
The city of dreams, he says, has made his come true.
"I came to Mumbai thinking I wanted to do something. I have the talent though I have never learnt it professionally. All I knew was that I wanted to do something," says he.
As luck would have it for Kumar, Kekoo Gandhy, whose Chemould Art Gallery was the first to exhibit M F Hussain's, was passing Pradeep's dosa stall, when he saw some of the paintings that Kumar had made in his free time.
"His hand just flows and within minutes he comes up with the right drawing, the right balance of colour, of shades and light," says Gandhy.
Pradeep's best works will soon be exhibited under Gandhy's patronage. The erstwhile dosa-maker's shy smile betrays his happiness at the turn his life has taken and he simply lets his bold brush strokes do the rest of the talking.
