Meerut: What started as a dowry dispute has killed one policeman and injured six other people who were trying to save two grooms from angry villagers in Meerut.
Latafat and Gafoor were to marry two girls from the same family in Meerut and had made a dowry demand of a motorbike and Rs 26,000.
The brides' family had agreed to these demands, when the grooms' father allegedly demanded more dowry after the nikah, and even threatened talaq if the demand was not met.
The brides' brother, Bilal, said, "They demanded a car and Rs 1 lakh at the last moment. That led to differences between our families."
The second demand proved to be extremely contentious, for the matter rapidly degenerated into violence with the grooms being thrashed by villagers.
Matters worsened when the police tried to intervene.
Feeling that the police was shielding the grooms' family, the crowd started pelting the policemen with stones, and a riot broke lose, leading to the death of one police constable.
Meerut SSP Jyoti Narain said, "We arrested seven people. The injured policemen are in Meerut Hospital but are out of danger."
The police has registered two different cases for dowry harrassment and rioting. Investigations into the riot are continuing but no arrests have been made in that case so far.
The situation continues tense with RAF and PAC jawans regularly flag-marching through the village in order to maintain peace.
