According to police reports, nearly half of the women in the state suffer at the hands of their own relatives and family members.
According to Women’s Commission member P K Sainaba, the basic cause of domestic violence is the ‘uncontrolled dowry system.’ Most of the bridegrooms and their family members feel there is nothing wrong with the dowry system, she said.
The dependence of women on their family for survival too is paving the way for the increasing domestic violence against women.
Those being tortured by alcoholic husbands are also on the rise, she said.
