Ahmedabad: A Delhi Public School bus met with an accident near Ahmedabad on Wednesday morning when it collided with a bus.

Nine-year-old Atul Rathore, a class IV student, died and a dozen others were injured. Drivers of both the truck and the bus are absconding, however the police say that the bus driver was at fault.

"The bus was traveling at a high speed and so was the truck. Both could not control their vehicles,” says deputy SP, Ahmedabad Rural, AM Jadeja.

Some injured students are critical and have been admitted to the SAL Hospital. Doctors say a team of specialists is monitoring their condition.

"Primarily, all the admitted children are stable. But we will continue to keep them under observation,” says SAL Hospital, Dr Nitin Shah.

Anxious parents rushed to the school as news of the accident spread. Others gathered at hospitals where the injured students had been admitted.

Agitated parents even damaged three school buses. The school administration though insists drivers are trained to observe rules and that there is no report that the bus was being driven rashly.

"We do not have any information on that, but we will investigate it thoroughly. What I can tell you is that we observe all rules,” says Public Relations Offcer, DPS, Unmesh Dixit.

However, this accident involving a DPS school bus is another reminder that the safety of students is still grossly inadequate.
