Dr called cops, foiled one '93 plot

Mumbai: Mohammad Iqbal Shaikh, the man who parked the scooter at Dadar was convicted by the special TADA court on Monday.

The scooter didn't explode because of the timely action of Dr Jaichand Mandot, who is now a community hero.

Preserved by the residents of a narrow street in Mumbai's Dadar East as a reminder of their mortality - a life size photograph of the scooter of death. The scooter was parked outside Dr Mandot's clinic.

He alerted the police a day after the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai and lucky that he did, for as it turned out, the scooter contained 14 kgs of RDX. The key of the scooter was later found at Tiger Memon's home.

"Some black substance was leaking from the boot of the scooter, so I became suspicious. I took out a bit of the material and fired it with a match. It burst like a cracker and then I thought of explosives," says Dr Jaichand Mandot.

Hawkers and shops - all would have but vanished, had the scooter exploded on the intended day - 13 March, 1993 - at Naigoan crossroad.

The residents of the area say that they are indebted to the doctor even today.

The conviction of Mohommad Shaikh by the special TADA court has come as a relief to the residents of the Naigoan lane. Thirteen-and-a-half years after Dr Mandot's life-saving discovery, they're still grateful to him.
